A Music Recording Contract, or a record deal, is an agreement that record labels use to assert their ownership of the product of a recording session (the master recording) and their licensing rights in the promotion of the record. They also use the contract to detail the payment of a fixed percentage The Standard Record Deal (“SRD”), which is not the standard today, represents the type of offer prior to the digital revolution. In remote cases they’re still used, primarily with A-listers. The focus rests on recorded music and album sales. Music industry contracts that allow a record label to receive a percentage of the earnings from all a band's activities are referred to as 360 deals. The arrangement is somewhat controversial. Other contracts simply pay a percentage from record sales or from money-making activities that the record label has a hand in. The 360 deal, often referred to as the “multiple rights” deal, seem to be the future for artists agreements between them and labels. With this deal, the label gives the artists a big advance and joins with them in a kind of  “partnership”, sharing in any and all profits made by that artist.
